What is a lupine allergy?

Oral food challenge
Where the diagnosis is uncertain or where an individual with peanut allergy needs to determine whether lupine poses a clinical risk, an oral food challenge may be recommended under direct medical supervision.
Treatment
Avoidance
Strict avoidance of lupine and lupine-containing products is the primary management strategy. As noted, lupine is not a named major allergen under US food labeling law, meaning it will not always be flagged prominently on ingredient labels. It may appear as lupine flour, lupine seed, lupine protein, lupine bean, lupine flour, or simply as part of a flour blend. Careful ingredient review is essential, particularly for:
- Gluten-free breads, pastas, and baked goods — lupine flour is a common gluten-free ingredient
- High-protein breads and fitness-oriented baked goods
- Pasta and noodle products, particularly those marketed as high-protein or gluten-free
- Plant-based meat products and meat extenders

- Imported European baked goods and packaged foods, where lupine is more commonly used and labeled

Antihistamines
Antihistamines can be given after epinephrine administration to help block the histamine-mediated portion of an allergic reaction. They should not be depended on as a standalone treatment for food allergies.
Epinephrine
Individuals with a history of severe lupine reactions or confirmed peanut allergy with demonstrated lupine cross-reactivity should carry an epinephrine auto-injector (such as an EpiPen, Auvi-Q, or neffy intranasal epinephrine) at all times.
