What Is LTP Allergy?
Lipid transfer protein allergy, often called LTP syndrome, is a pattern of food allergy caused by sensitization to a family of small, highly stable proteins found across a wide range of plant foods. Unlike many plant food allergens, LTPs are resistant to heat, digestion, and food processing, which means cooking, baking, or canning does not reliably reduce their allergenic potential. This is a key difference from birch pollen-related food allergens like Bet v1 homologs, which typically break down with cooking and cause much milder reactions.
LTP allergy is most extensively studied in Mediterranean populations, where peach is often the primary sensitizing food through its LTP protein, Pru p3. Antihistamines
