What is a yeast allergy?
Yeast allergy is an immune-mediated reaction triggered by proteins found in yeast — single-celled fungi used extensively in food production, baking, brewing, and fermentation, as well as in nutritional supplements and some pharmaceutical preparations. A second species, Candida albicans, is occasionally implicated in yeast hypersensitivity, though the evidence base for Candida-driven food reactions is less robust.
Yeast allergy is considered uncommon relative to the major food allergens, but its clinical significance is frequently underestimated because yeast is present in such a wide range of everyday foods and beverages — many of which are not obviously yeast-containing. Bread, beer, wine, vinegar, soy sauce, miso, Vegemite, Marmite, stock cubes, and a broad range of fermented and processed foods all contain yeast or yeast-derived compounds. Severe symptoms:
- Throat tightening or difficulty swallowing

Occupational yeast allergy is a recognized entity among bakers and brewery workers, where repeated inhalation of airborne yeast particles can lead to sensitization and the development of occupational rhinitis and asthma. Skin prick test
A skin prick test can assess sensitization to Saccharomyces cerevisiae and related yeast allergens. Fresh baker’s yeast extract and commercial yeast extracts may be used. Simultaneous testing for mold allergens and dust mite is typically performed given the enolase cross-reactivity pattern and the frequency of co-sensitization in atopic individuals.
Blood test
A blood test measuring specific IgE antibodies to Saccharomyces cerevisiae proteins can confirm sensitization. Given the cross-reactivity between yeast enolase and dust mite and mold allergens, broader fungal and inhalant panels may provide additional useful information in individuals with complex reactivity patterns.
Elimination diet
An elimination diet removing yeast-containing foods — including bread, beer, wine, vinegar, and yeast extracts — for a defined period, followed by structured reintroduction, can help confirm yeast as the trigger when the clinical history is suggestive but testing is inconclusive. Given the breadth of foods containing yeast, this is a complex dietary intervention that benefits from professional guidance.
Oral food challenge
Where the diagnosis remains uncertain after testing and elimination, an oral food challenge using a standardized yeast preparation may be recommended under direct medical supervision.

Avoidance
Strict avoidance of yeast and yeast-containing products is the primary management strategy for confirmed yeast allergy. Yeast is not a named major allergen under US food labeling law and will not always be prominently disclosed on labels. Careful ingredient review is essential across a broad range of product categories:

Is yeast allergy the same as gluten intolerance or coeliac disease?
No. Yeast allergy and gluten intolerance are completely distinct conditions that happen to share some common trigger foods — particularly bread and beer. Gluten intolerance and coeliac disease involve reactions to gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye, while yeast allergy involves immune reactions to yeast proteins. It is possible to have both conditions simultaneously, and reactions to bread may involve one or both mechanisms. An allergist can test for both to clarify which is driving your symptoms.
Can I eat sourdough bread if I have a yeast allergy?
Sourdough bread is leavened through wild yeast and bacterial fermentation rather than commercial baker’s yeast, and the long fermentation process degrades some yeast proteins.
